Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires four years of additional hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. In addition, Drs. Julian, Woo and Zakhary have also graduated from medical school and completed fellowship level training in head and neck surgery.
As highly trained oral and maxillofacial surgeons, they manage a wide variety of problems relating to the head and neck, mouth, teeth, and facial region. Their practice offers a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery including: dental implants, dental extraction, wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery, repair of facial injuries including fractures of all types (jaws, orbit, nose and cheek bones), removal malignant and benign tumors (including oral cancer and salivary gland tumors) of the head and neck region, surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, medical/surgical treatment of TMJ and facial pain disorders, specialty care for cleft and craniofacial conditions and major maxillofacial reconstruction.
Office based surgery is offered under both local anesthesia as well as intravenous sedation/light general anesthesia when needed for patient comfort. Major operations are completed in a hospital operating room environment and Drs. Julian, Woo and Zakhary practice mainly at Community Medical Centers, Fresno. However, they also have privileges at Saint Agnes Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Central California and Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Fresno.
Robert S. Julian III, DDS, MD - Dr. Julian serves as the department head for Community Medical Centers, Fresno department of OMFS and director of residency training of the UCSF-Fresno Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Residency training program. Dr. Julian graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) School of Dentistry (DDS) in 1988 and completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Washington Hospital Center in 1992. He graduated with a medical degree from University of Alabama (MD) in 1994, completed a non-categorical year of general surgery in 1995, and then completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery in 1996. He is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Julian excels at complex maxillofacial surgery including the repair of facial injuries, treatment of oral cancer, and major maxillofacial reconstructive procedures. Dental implants with restoration of oral-facial function are also an area of specific interest. Dr. Julian’s academic practice involves a “patient care first” philosophy as he treats patients from the broadest demographic possible. He has privileges to perform surgery at Community Medical Centers of Fresno Hospitals, Saint Agnes Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Central California.
Brian M. Woo, DDS, MD - Dr. Woo earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and his medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University. He also completed his residency training in general surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. After his residency he completed a fellowship in head and neck surgery and micro vascular reconstruction at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. In addition to head and neck surgery, he also received additional training in craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, and facial cosmetics during his fellowship. His areas of interest are head and neck cancer, head and neck reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, and trauma.
George M. Zakhary, DDS, MD - Dr. Zakhary received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Creighton University. He then attended dental school at the University of Oklahoma, and medical school at Louisiana State University Health in Shreveport. He went on to complete both his General Surgery Internship and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Louisiana State University Health in Shreveport. He further subspecialized in the accredited Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery fellowship at LSU. Upon completion of his fellowship he was on staff with the LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department and is now on staff with the UCSF Fresno Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. He is based in Fresno at Community Medical Centers. He has taken a special interest in educating future healthcare providers through workshops and courses he arranged during his time in professional school, receiving multiple awards for his efforts. His primary areas of interest include cleft and craniofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, facial trauma, benign head and neck pathology, and dentoalveolar surgery. He has authored journal articles on craniofacial surgery, orthognathic surgical treatment of sleep apnea, as well as a book chapter on treatment of mandibular pathology.

The surgical staff of the OMFS Care Center at CRMC are all experienced, certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants, who assist in administration of surgery and IV anesthesia. All our staff is CPR certified.
